Artistic tram barn

6 Oct

When around the Wynyard Quarter tram route, take time out at the tram storage barn (shed) in Daldy Street. And don’t forget your camera – you’ll soon see why. The doors and two walls are magnificently adorned with photo murals of the former Auckland tramways. The photographs were taken by New Zealand tramway devotee, Graham Stewart. Stewart was a one-time chief photographer at the nearby New Zealand Herald. During his leisure time he photographed every tramway system in the country and has produced several great books on the subject. But he is mystified how his old film negatives could be reproduced so large on the tram barn. They are, indeed, superb.
